Should we sell forests?

What to do with Raetihi and Ohakune's share of the Wanganui United Council forestry venture shares will be a decision for the new Ruapehu District Council to make. That was the decision of the Ruapehu Transition Committee last Friday. The matter was discusscd last Friday by the district Transition Committee, prompted by a letter from the United Council informing the committee that management of the forestry will be handed to the new Wanganui Manawatu Regional Council. The WUC

asked that the committee consider its proposals and whether the district council will continue to be involvcd in the venture. If a decision to sell is made, the Wanganui

District Council may be interested in purchasing any shares, the letter stated. The forestry venture has been going ten years and has seen the establishment of 1000

hectares of production forest. The aims of the venture were to generate an income to offset rates, to promote wise land use and to create employment opportunities.
