Civil defence gap filled

An interim civil defence plan for the Ruapehu District was prescnted to the RDC Transition Committee last Friday. The plan is based on the three amalgamating authorities plus northern Rangitikei's (Waiouru's). In June 1990 a new, reviewed plan will be presented to the Manawatu Wanganui Regional Council for approval. During the discussion on the matter Mayor Workman asked about the prospect of a _volcanic eruption.

Civil Defence rcprescntative Dave Neil said "may it ncver happcn". The committee heard that the Waimarino District Council has been waiting for some time for a civil defence plan for volcanic eruption from Turoa Skifields. Mr Neil said the Department of Conscrvation and Civil Defence were very keen to develop a plan for dealing with a volcanic eruption. He said it should bc based on the potential hazard rathcr than on regional boundaries.

He told the committee a comprchensive review of the civil defence communications system should be complctc by Christmas.
