More, or less health care access?
Two scenarios face area health boards. One would see fixed boundaries with patients forced to seek treatment in their own board areas, the other would see boards marketing their health services across boundaries. The two scenarios were discussed at last week's Ruapehu Transition Committee meeting. Taumarunui Hospital Board chairman David Kydd said boards may seek barricrs to stop people going out of their area for health services. He saw restricting people's present rights to go to any hospital as a method boards may use to keep their services cost effective. From page 2 boards may, however, market their scrvices across boundaries, to reach the same end. Both said local authorities are likely to be more closely associated with area health boards in future, with Mr Kydd saying they may play a role in providing community input into board activities. Mrs Scarrow said health watch committees, which already operate in the southern Ruapehu area, may develop a stronger link with the council. She said the health watch committees are a marvelous link with the area health board.
