Region logo win

The Winner of the 'Design-A-Logo' competition for the new Manawatu-Wanganui Regional Council was announced yesterday. The winning entry came from 17 year old Joanne Lysaght of Carterton and was selected from more than 147 entries. Don Irvine, spokesperson for the Manawatu-Wan-ganui Regional Council Transitional Committee, expressed his de-

light over the quality of entries received. "It was not an easy task selecting a winner, as so many of the entries captured the essence of the new Region. Miss Lysaght's design, however, met all the criteria we had listed for 'the logo"'. Miss Lysaght's design incorporates the letters 'M' for Manawatu and 'W' for Wanganui. The letters are twisted together to symbolise the joining together of

the two regions to form the new Regional Council. The 'M' is also symbolic of the mountain ranges within the region and the 'W' of water. The intertwined letters are also representative of Civil Defence and Land Transport. The winner of the junior category was 13 year old Palmerston North schoolboy Ryan Herbert. Miss Lysaght receives $500 cash and Ryan a BMX bike.
