Waiouru to host NZ league players

New Zealand's young guns of rugby league are to meet at Waiouru Military Camp for a national under-17 tournament next week. From 3-8 September, eight teams will represent their provinces: Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Midlands, Manawatu, Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Waikato. As well as the competitive matches, much time will be spent

coaching the sportsmen and, at night, the players will attend lectures to develop and consolidate league skills. A New Zealand tournament team will be selected on completion of all competition games. Guests for the meet are to include Bob Hall, the New Zealand Rugby Football League director of coaching; Mike Knowles, executive secretary of the NZRFL;

George Rainey, NZRFL chairman; Tony Gordon, Kiwi coach; Howie T amiti, former Kiwi captain and Keith Roberts, the New Zealand selector. Most of the guests will be in Waiouru for the duration of the meet to run coaching clinics. Two Waiouru players are included in the Manawatu team - Myra Patterson, and Brian Waona, a Regular Force Cadet soldier.
