Pony president
The Waimarino's Mrs Ann Roke was recently elected a Vice President of the New Zealand Pony Club Association at their Annual Conference on Wairoa, and this was acknowledged on Saturday 19th with a presentation of flowers from the members of her King Country Area. Tania Taylor was also presented with a trophy as highest scoring member of the New Zealand team competing for the Nations Cup during the Inter-pacific Competition in April at
Flock House. It has certainly been a momentous year for the King Country Area, which has be far the smallest membership of the 16 areas throughout New Zealand. What the group lack in numbers, they certainly make up for in quality. The King Country Area Horsemastership Quiz held following these presentations showed they have some very knowledgeable riders in their midst and it was obvious that a lot of preparation had gone in before the five teams met to compete for the Weir Trophy presented by Mr Eric Weir of Taumarunui. Teams from Taumarunui, Ongarue, Kaitieke, Ohakune and Raetihi consisting of five members each, answered a wide range of questions on all aspects of horsemastership with the Raetihi team coming out the victors for the second year in succession. Their team, captained by Rachel James, with Rodney McCoubrie, Trudi Allerby, Emma Cornwall and Sally Williams scored 100 points, followed closely by Ongarue on 99 1/2, Kaitieke on 91, Ohakune on 88 1/2 and Taumarunui on 82 1/2.
