REGULAR SKI RACES ON AGAIN AT RUAPEHU

Two North Island Circuit races are scheduled for Mt Ruapehu this weekend - the Taubmans' Slalom on Saturday and the Rossignol Giant Slalom on Sunday 27 August. At least 60 entries are expected in the event, run annually. Taubmans have taken over from Homestyle for sponsorship of the slalom event. Last year the event was run on the same Turoa course as the 1987 International FIS series, on excellent snow which saw some fast times recorded. The first run in each race is due to take place at 10.30am and racers will run the course twice in each event. Last year's winners were Canadian Chris Winter in the men's slalom, TASCI's Annita Haywood in the women's slalom, Whakapapa Ski Club's Ben Tidswell in the giant slalom and Janey Blair from Queenstown in the Women's giant slalom. If bad weather affects the running of the races the event will be postponed until the first fine day afterwards. The following weekend the McDonalds Cup giant slalom and slalom will also be held at Turoa.
