Waiouru welcome for Terry
After six weeks in Waiouru as ambulance officer Terry Fisk says he loves his new lifestyle and has found the people very welcoming.
Terry is also thankful for the co-operation from the locals in helping to set up the ambulance service. There are twenty people in his auxiliary team made up of qualified St John staff and army medics who with the help of bleepers assist Terry when he is called out. Since moving to Waiouru in July with his wife Sheryl and cat 'Claws', the work load for Terry has been fairly light in respect to call outs, but Terry is kept busy with first aid instruction and general ambulance related work. The first job of the day is a check of the ambulance to ensure it is ready to go at short notice. The rest of the day is spent attending health related meetings, writing rosters and reports, arranging first aid instruction. Terry says there is also always plenty of ambulance related reading to do.
When Terry has his days off or is required to leave the area for some reason an ambulance officer from Taihape comes to Waiouru as relief. Terry says he has had
a lot of support from the army in setting up the service and at present has a Heart Monitor on loan from the army hospital. For people interested in volunteer work associated with the ambulance service Terry can be contacted on Waiouru 56-328.
