Who can vote, or stand for council

The Waiouru Community Advisory Council Committee has decided to sponsor a meeting of potential candidates for the Local Body Elections in October. The meeting will be held on Monday 21 August 1989 in the Waiouru Community

Centre at 7.30 pm.

The Secretary of the

Waiouru Community Advisory Council Committee Kathy Frater said the intention of the meeting was to find out what interest there was in the community for positions available. It would also be an opportunity for interested people to find out what the positions involved. Kathy Frater said it was important for Waiouru people to take the chance that the Government Commission had given them and have some say in their own affairs. It was essential that Waiouru people were nominated for all posts available. The Waiouru Commu-

nity Advisory Council has also circulated a leaflet to Waiouru residents outlining the position available for election and urging Waiouru residents to ensure they are enrolled to vote. The elections take place on Saturday 14 October and voting for Waiouru residents will be by postal voting. All registered electors will receive voting papers sometime prior to election day. Waiouru residents will be able to vote for: • A Mayor for the Ruapehu District. • Two Councillors to represent the Waiouru Ward on the new Ruapehu District Council. • Six Members for the Waiouru Community Council. • Two Ruapehu District representatives on the Manawatu-Wanganui

Regional Council. • Representatives for the Manawatu-Wanganui Area Health Board. This is a chance for W aiouru residents to have their say in local

government by putting their names forward as candidates and also by voting. Nominations are now open for all positions Turnpage 10

Who can vote?

From page 7 and close on 1 September 1989. While the term is for three years

Waiouru residents should still consider standing even if they cannot complete the full three year term, says the Waiouru Community Advisory Committee. The various organisations could later fill the vacancy through a by-election. To qualify to vote you must be enrolled, be 18 years or older, have lived in the district for one month and be either a New,Zealand citizen or a permanent resident who has at some period resided continuously in New Zealand for a period of not less than one year. Electors on the parliamentary roll automatically qualify to vote in the local body election and the Ruapehu District Council has produced a local roll. These can be checked at both the Post Office and the AGI
