"Stars" keep Ohakune U19s score down
Ohakune-Karioi Under 19s played Wanganui Pirates at Ohakune in fine weather but the ground was wet and heavy under foot.
Ohakune-Karioi were soon on attack, but failed to score points because of silly penalties given away for offside play and obstruction. The backs were wasting good ball with across-field running. After 15 minutes Dallas Waara, on the right wing, scored on the corner after the ball was passed with speed through the backline. The Ohakune-Karioi forwards were starting to fire and from a scrum five metres from the Pirates line OhakuneKarioi won a tight head, number 8 Richard Hamlin picked up and passed to Neil Fredricksen, on to Mathew Read to touch down by the posts. Mark Donghi converted. From a scrum near half way the ball was moved out to the left wing, back into the forwards and then out to the right for centre
Grant Barrett to score in the right hand corner for a excellent try. Just before half time Pirates scored after charging down a clearing kick by Ohakune-Karioi. The second half saw Ohakune-Karioi win more than their share of ball, but a repetition of last week's second half saw tries lost by players once again attempting to score themselves rather than pass to someone in a better position. Ohakune-Karioi were to score two more tries, one by each wing Eugene Wilson and Jason Haitana. Both wings were capable of scoring more tries if they were given more quick ball. Final score was Ohakune-Karioi 22 Wanganui Pirates 4. Player of the match for Ohakune-Karioi was Dale Hemera. OhakuheKarioi play Taihape Pirates at Taihape next Saturday.
