Midge draws 'reasonable' crowd
Thursday and Friday night's Midge Marsden concert drew reasonable crowds but arriving the same time as the snow meant numbers were down. Those that were there enjoyed his distinctive style of blues rock and most popular song of the evening was "Travel 'in on" from his well known television advertisement. Somebody who has been drawing a lot of attention from the audience is Lynne Campbell, the lead guitarist. Lynne, who has only been playing electric guitar for the last four years, had her anniversary with the Midge Marsden band this tour. She first played this time last year in Ohakune. Her exceptional lead guitar playing has been stopping people in their tracks in what has been traditionally a male dominated role.
Mike Abbott playing drums is very familar to the Hot Lava nightclub not just playing for Midge but also being from Ohakune. Also from Ohakune was the support band who don't have a name though the members Nigel, Mat, Auroa, Pat, Nor and Jo warmed the crowd well and had them dancing before Midge Marsden took the stage. Midge was full of praise for the local band and said he was pleased with Paul Beckett of Hot Lava's choice. When Midge was asked if he'll be back next year, his reply was "definitely." His unfaltering loyalty to the punter, especially those of the small towns will never die. When he does retire he says he wants to go out with a tour of his homeland, Taranaki.
