On the front page of the Taumarunui "Press" on 11 July, it is reported that Mr Podmore says, "It is essential in the formative stages to keep the community and ratepayers fully informed ..." He is again reported in "Press Briefs" of that paper as saying that a Vice Regal visit by His Excellency and Lady Reeves to Ohura and Taumarunui in early November will be hosted by the then newly formed Ruapehu District Council. Readers will know, from your Bulletin reporting the same, that the original budget of total estimated Transition Committee expenses this year, was raised by $68,500.00 from $666,500.00 to $734,000.00. This extra sum was reported to the Transition committee as, "What might be ; deemed to be necessary . or desirable work progressing through September to March 1990." The visit, lasting three days, may very • well be the first to be ' made to any newly - • formed district. I am • certain readers will join : with me in hoping that ; His Excellency and : Lady Reeves will enjoy \ their visit and will be blessed with every pos- • sible advantage including fine, warm, ■ weather. (And, dare I . say it?, also enjoy their \ part in the resulting ? good publicity for the Ruapehu District Counz cil and the people of : our area). In keeping with the / stated aims above, in the opening paragraph,
could we know, please: - Who planned the visit? Why was the visit not an agenda item for the Transition Committee to debate in open forum? Will all four amalgamating bodies have to share the cost? As one of the many thousands who live in what Mayor Podmore categorizes as. "The more remote parts of the district like Waimarino and Waiouru", and also one who is prepared to work for the total eradication of petulant parochialism, I trust that these queries can be answered satisfactorily.

No commission Readers may remember a Mailbag letter from a few weeks ago by Donna McGrath, where she offered our Prime Minister commission for turning people's hair grey. Here's his reply: Dear Donna McGrath I appreciated receiving your letter and admire your brand of humour. You may have noted that since becoming Prime Minister I have acquired a grey hair or two but I am not claiming any commission. I return the cheque for $20.00 which you sent to me and suggest that you present it to your favourite charity.

Aid appeal I am appealing to the whole district of the
Waimarino for support for the local St John Ambulance Ohakune. Not only for members new and old but ideas of how we can keep going. There will be a special meeting on Wednesday night at 8pm on August 9 in the Fire Brigade Hall and you are all invited to attend and please bring along your ideas. We are not appealing for money. We are loosing far too many amenities for the area as far as health care goes so if you want the boys or girls in Black & White to attend your sports or accidents or home sickness I suggest that you come along to the meeting and don't just leave it up to the other person.
