3000 Ruapehu singers?

Three thousand choral singers performing at a moun-tain-side concert on Ruapehu? - that is an idea being mentioned in plans for a choral festival for October 1990, now in theoarly planning stages. Called the Ohakune Odyssey, the event could be the most culturally significant of the 1990 commemorations. The idea is to attract singers from all over New Zealand to join in "the first ever national choral festival of this magnitude to be held in this country." Details are hazy, by the organiser's own admission, but some factors have been mooted. The festival date has been tentatively set down for labour weekend 1990, with a format similar to a sing-in held in Auckland. The location would be Ohakune, and possi-

bly at a mountain-side site on Mount Ruapehu. The idea calls for a very large orchestra with musical direction from international conductor Willi Gohl.

Notices have been sent, to choirs nationwide calling for representatives, or whole choirs to attend - with numbers limited to 3000! singers.
