Turoa starts skiing

It was third time lucky for Turoa on the weekend with the skifield open for business both days. Two earlier attempts at starting the ski season were stymied by rain which washed away early snow. Determined to start their season, Turoa used a helicopter and modified wool packs to fly snow down to form a groomer-wide ski trail from the bottom of the Yahoo trail to the Giant Chairlift mid-station, making the ski trails above skiable. Each day on the weekend a few hundred people enjoyed the limited skiing on the two top Giant Chair trails, the Yahoo and the Freeway. Conditions were cold on Saturday and clear on Sunday. Some snow fell on the weekend and Turoa's Manager Andy Chapman said they were hopeful of more falling midweek which would lead to more facilities operating this weekend. At Whakapapa two chairlifts were operating for sightseers, with about 500 people using the facilities.
