Deerstalkers, advertisers and radio operators praised

Over the last couple of days Ruapehu College has been the venue for the New Zealand Deerstalkers Association 41st Annual Conference. This has been a successful venture for the Waimarino Deerstalkers Association and the organisers are to be congratulated on their foresight in having the conference in Ohakune. It is the first national convention held at the College and I hope in the future other groups will consider the

Waimarino as a venue for their conventions; we have the accommodation and other attractions. With the resources available in our region, lobbying could well result in further conferences here. The College PTA has produced a local telephone directory, this includes the Raetihi and Ohakune numbers unfortunately the Waiouru numbers could not be included as their numbers are tied into the Taihape area.

Thanks to the local advertisers who supported us and the 'Bulletin' for supplying the comprehensive emergency and information numbers. Copies will be available from the College, through any student or from Berry's Bookshop. Ruapehu College through Mr G Brebner and Mr R Milne have become included in the Taupo Mountain Radio Service. This is a nonprofit organisation which has small portable two-way radios available for hire to

groups climbing, hunting or tramping anywhere in New Zealand. These radios have already proved successful in a recent rescue on Mt Ruapehu. There are three sets available, two of which were purchased with funds from the College and local community groups. Should you wish to hire one of these units please contact the College.
