Sign, sections, shift plans approved
The erection of a sign advising motorists of the location of a group of Tainui Street, Ohakune ski apartments was approved by the Waimarino District Council at their last meeting.
I he application, from Osvald Rokstad, was to build a sign at 3 Tainui Street (near State Highway 49) advertising Ossie's Ski Apartments at 69 Tainui Street. Conditions imposed in approving the sign included that the exact location of the sign be to the satisfaction of council and that the sign be constructed in natural timber with either routed or coloured lettering with an area of no more than two square metres. In discussing the issue, councillor Errol Sue said he believed the apartments were first built as private accommodation, then changed to commercial at the request of the council and that if the applicant's property were in the right zone he wouldn't have had the planning problems. Mayor Workman said he believed in Raetihi's case, allowing some signs in Raetihi had not led to a proliferation of signs. Cr Ken Summerhays said the application was a "sign of the times". House move The council approved the relocation of a two year old Arawa Street house to 25 Tainui Street recently. No objections to the application were received. Subdivision scheme approved A scheme plan involving the subdivision of a block of land on the corner of Lee
Street and Mangawhero T errace into 1 1 residential sections with a balance area to be left for future development has been ap-
proved by council. The subdivision would see the 7073 square metre property divided into lots ranging from 300 m2 to 525
m2. In his recommendations the Town Planner said there was some concem at the size of some of the lots but
that it was still possible that small units could be built on them. He said it should be brought to the attention of prospective purchasers that the council's general policy is to allow no dispensations for new houses on new sections. Railways land The town planner asked the council at their last meeting if they would agree in principal to Railways gaining unit title to land at the Northern
end of Ruapehu Road, where 13 Railway houses are sited. The council heard that it would be contrary to the town plan, but that if the title were not granted Railways were going to be "looking at a bulldozer". Cr Thompson said council had wasted enough time on "crazy applications" for Railways land. "Let them spend some time on it before asking us," he said.
