He was ordered to pay a minimum of $300 per month in reparation and remanded to September 14, by which time he will have paid $1000. "If you have, you can stay in the community and pay off the other thousand. If you haven't, I wouldn't want to be in your shoes..." Sheep slaughtering costs Pipiriki youth A 17-year-old Pipiriki youth was fined $200 for slaughtering three hoggets worth $26 each last week. Donovan Hopkinson admitted guilt for the offence which occurred on May 30 on the Raetihi Pipiriki Road. He and an associate had herded and slaughtered the three hoggets in a paddock and were about to load the carcasses into their vehicle when they were caught by a local farmer. They then left the carcasses and drove away. Hopkinson later said
to police that he had been helping a friend and stood to gain nothing from the incident. He was fined and ordered to make reparation and, in default of immediate payment, sentenced to 42 days' imprisonment. Judge Unwin said it was a cynical act and "they used to call this cattle rustling and people used to get strung up for it." Name suppression Interim name suppression was granted to an Ohakune woman, aged 23, who faced seven charges of intent to defraud last week, which she admitted. Reparation from the offences which were committed in Palmerston North between July 29 and August 19, amounted to $837.17. She was convicted and remanded to July 27 for a probation report, a reparation report and sentencing. Paul Brown appeared for the woman. No licencc Derek Te Waruonoema Gray, a 30-year-old Pipiriki person, admitted to driving without a licence on Pipiriki Road on March 26. The judge adjourned the case to August 17 telling Gray that if he produced a licence then he would be convicted and discharged. Final warning James Manuel Honana, 24, faces a five year prison term for three disqualified driving charges, said Judge Unwin. He received a final
warning and was told that if he drives within the next 12 months he will face imprisonment. As well as being disqualified from driving for 12 months from September 15 he was placed under supervision for 12 months. Not guilty plea Adam Dominic Stephen Te Tawhero Haitana, 22 of Raetihi, pleaded not guilty to a charge of smoking cannabis on June 3. He was remanded to July 27 for a defended hearing. Speaker theft Barry Richards, 24, Raetihi shearer, was fined $150 for stealing an $85 car radio speaker. He pleaded guilty to the offence which he
committed outside the Raetihi Hotel on June 15. While drunk, he reached inside a parked vehicle which had a smashed front window and removed the speaker. The incident was a drunken idiotic escapade, said Judge Unwin. Weights' theft James Jason Taiaroa, 19 or Raetihi, performed an "opportunist and somewhat pointless theft" on June 14 and was fined $175 for it. He stole $78 worth of weightlifting equipment - two dumbells and weights -from a Queen Street House's shed. Careless use Michael Callaghan, 58 of Raetihi, was
fined $150 for a May 26 charge of careless use of a motor vehicle on State Highway 49 A. He pleaded guilty to the charge by letter. Arrest warrant Kevin John Cambell, 40 of Christchurch, is the subject of an arrest warrant after last week's court sitting. He is charged with driving while disqualified on Ohakune's Arawa Street on June 1. Suspended sentence Charmaine Larisha Green received a six month suspended sentence after she pleaded guilty to failing to report to her supervising probation officer on February 1. No licence Patrick Hohua Tahu, 31 of Ohakune, pleaded guilty to driving without a licence on State Highway 49 without a licence and driving a vehicle without a warrant of fitness on December 9, 1988. Judge Unwin adjourned the case to August 17 telling Tahu that if he could produce a licence he would be convicted and discharged for driving without a licence and would most probably receive a small fine for the warrant of fitness charge. Drunk-driving Dean Hiroti, 28, a Raetihi shearer was convicted on an April 1 charge of driving with an excess breath-alco-hol level.
Hiroti pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 100 hours' community service. He was also disqualified from holding or obtaining a driver's licence for six months. Not guilty plea Adam Dennis Perkins, 21 of Raetihi, is to appear for a defended hearing on July 27 to face a charge, from May 20, of receiving a XT500 Yamaha motorcycle worth $4000. $1000 fines Mark Thomas Odgers, a 22 year-old Waiouru soldier was fined a total of $1000 after he pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, with an excess breathalcohol level and driving while disqualified. Judge Unwin said he would be justified in imposing a 60 day "short, sharp shock" prison term, but decided against it because: Odgers' Army career looked set to end, a hospital report indicated he had a drinking problem, and the presence of his parents and commanding officer in court showed he had some support. $750 of the fine was for drunk-driving and $250 for driving while disqualified plus he received 12 months' driving disqualification. Case dismissed A charge against Rex Colin Newman was dismissed after a defended hearing last Thursday.
The charge of causing intentional damage arose from a domestic dispute between Newman, 34, and his mother-in-law, where a Burns Street, Ohakune property window was broken on May 16. To do something intentionally meant it had to be done with a purpose or recklessly, said Judge Unwin and, while he said he was satisfied Newman had
broken the window he said he was not satisfied he had done so recklessly or on purpose. The judge said he hoped Newman was enough of a gentleman to offer to pay for the damage which, he hoped, would lead to resolving the dispute. There were five witnesses called, three for the prosecutioh and two for the defence.
