Train derailment

An express freight train derailed at Ohakune last Friday blocking the Main Trunk Line for 12 hours. The ninth wagon of the train, loaded with wall boards, derailed at 2.45am but the cause is as yet unknown. 10 Railway workers from Taumarunui and Ohakune worked to repair the track and fit a

new set of wheels to the damaged wagon. The derailment interrupted the running of 14 trains through Ohakune. 90 southbound passengers on the overnight Northerner were bussed from National Park to Wellington and 120 Silver Fern Railcar passengers were bussed between Waiouru and National Park.
