Charitable businesswoman

Ohakune S hoes proprietor Val Parkes, when not behind the counter of her business, is involved with her other interests, including the New Zealand D.E.B.R.A foundation and the Waimarino Cancer Support Group. The recipient of this week's Bouquet, Mrs Parkes has been involved with D.E.B.R.A., the organisation that supports sufferers of the genetic skin disease Epidermolysis Bullosa, since its formation in New Zealand in 1980. A member of her family is moderately affected by E.B. The disease which affects around 100 New Zealanders, manifests itself as burn-like blisters which require careful handling and treatment. According to Mrs Parkes, there are a number of children that are so severely affected by the disease, they are unable to be hugged or played with as are nor-

mal children. "All it would take is a pull on the skin and where they are touched comes up in blisters," she said. Mrs Parkes is actively involved in fundraising for D.E.B.R.A. which is a selfsupporting organisation.

Mrs Parkes is also a member of the Waimarino Cancer Support Group, and on the committee of the Ruapehu South Business Association. She is a keen golf player and lists her daughter-in-law, and her grand-daughter, as her special interests.
