Waiouru loses RDC member

Waiouru has lost one of its Ruapehu District Council ward representatives to allow Taumarunui' s representation to increase.

In the draft reorganisation scheme covering Waiouru, Waimarino, Taumarunui Borough and Taumarunui County it was proposed that both the Taumarunui and Waiouru wards would have three ward representatives. Taumarunui, with a population of more than 7000, picks up two members and Waiouru, with a population of about 3500, looses one. Taumarunui gains a fifth representative with the loss to the Ohura ward of one member.

The total number of representatives for the district remains at 14 plus a mayor. Waimarino's representation stays at three, despite its submission calling for four. Ohakune service centre The scheme upholds the proposed siting of a southern district service centre at Ohakune. The siting of the centre was the subject of debate prior to submissions being put to the Local Government Commission. WaimarTurn page 2

RDC scheme

Frompagel ino Mayor Garrick Workman gained much support for the idea of siting the centre at Raetihi, using exRaetihi local government offices. Ohakune councillors objected to this idea, as did most if not all of the Waiouru residents who attended a meeting of the Waiouru Community Advisory Committee on the scheme. The scheme dictates that the district council must maintain the centre until at least 1 November 1995. Community boards Communities are to be constituted for the Waimarino Ward, the Waiouru Ward, the National Park Ward and the Ohura Ward but not the Taumarunui Ward. A community board for each of those wards will be established consisting of six members elected by the community electors, the representatives on the Ruapehu District Council for that ward plus from time to time people appointed by the District Council. Transition Committee Membership of the district transition committee does not change with the scheme, despite calls for more representation for Waiouru. At present Waiouru is represented by one member of the Rangitikei County Council, which is the local authority that is currently responsible for Waiouru.
