Taumarunui Promotions group newsletter

From page 6 rates are, the closeness to the mountains, which compares

favourably with Turangi and Ohakune, was a major part of my job at the show.

The opportunity to promote our region to a large audience does not happen often. the next

is in August at Auckland for Travel Trade. Craft trainees The opening day for Access Promotions was very impressive. The crafts by trainees shows there is a great deal of talent out there. On display and for sale were some of the wood carving and kits from the Manu Ariki Marae courses and bone carving by Mr Sonny Otimi. I was invited to Manu Ariki Kokiri centre by the centre's director, Bev Murarahi. Bev and Richard Wilson gave me a guided tour of the Marae, its history, the new building and the Rock Club - a fascinating place I found very hard to leave. Ka 945 Sunday June 4, Queen's Birthday Weekend, and the day dawned bleak and cold. When I left home from National Park it was sleeting steadily and I wondered how the rest of the day would go. The cold did not dampen spirits as people crowded the platform to see the old locomotive, Ka 945, steam her way gracefully into the station. The highland pipe band gave the whole event atmosphere and spirit. The highlight for me was helping arrange for past drivers and workers to travel in on the footplate from Kakahi. The colouring-in competition was a great success, with over 100

entries. Well done to all those that entered, and winners and highly commended. The winners - Kerry Bell 9, and Andrew Old 12, enjoyed a trip with an adult of their choice. Tony Manning, who turned seven years old on Sunday, also had a special birthday treat. Tony travelled with his dad Colin to Kakahi

with the drivers, for a ride back on the train. Tony helped cut the birthday cake which had been baked and iced by Terry and Dianne Hemmingson. Centre information The Information Centre had 771 visitors for the month of May, compared to 710 in Mav 1988.

If you are interested in being a volunteer, phone myself or Jenny between 9-4pm, 7494. That's all for this month, but to pinch a phrase: "Growth is not an objective. It is the outcome of a successful performance."
