Weeds work for Pipiriki staff
Department of Conservation staff at Pipiriki have their work cut out for them in the fight against Japanese Walnut. Senior Conservation nell said the noxious Officer Dennis McDon- plant has invaded an
area of over 200 kilometres in the Whanganui River district. The plant has been carried into the district from Taumarunui via the river, he said. Mr McDonnell said workers face a "vast" task of cutting down the trees and painting the stumps to prevent re-growth. Workers have utilised many of the huts along the Whanganui River. Staff are also busy with a follow-up programme in the Mangapurua Valley and Te Mata district, where plant numbers are "controllable", according to Mr McDonnell. The area was spray ed by helicopter early last year. Pipiriki's three fulltime staff members and five volunteers from Taumarunui have been involved in the eradication programme since January. Mr McDonnell said the programme has received a financial boost of around $30,000 from the Department of Conservation for weed control on unallocated crown land.
