Turoa

Spirits are high among Turoa Skifield staff, who announced yesterday that some of the field's facilities will be open for Queens Birthday Weekend - the first time this has occured since 1983. Staff say Turoa's Alpine Meadow beginners' slope is skiiable, with 20-25cm new snow fallen in the carpark over the weekend. The Park Lane Chair will also be operating, for sightseeing only. Skifield officials will make another assessment of the field this Thursday, to decide whether any more

facilities will be operational. Staff say snow is light packed with a good base over most of the field. Whakapapa Snow conditions at Whakapapa are very similar; however officials say the field needs more snow before it will open for the season. Ruapehu Alpine Lifts General Manager, Dave Mazey, said the field received around 20cm snow over the weekend, a lot of which drifted due to high winds. Staff at Whakapapa will be making checks of the skifield through the week and will make a decision later in the week.
