Police soon full strength
The Waimarino's police force should be up to full strength by the end of June with the appointment of a new detective and a uniformed constable. Sergeant Russell
England told the Bulletin last week that the detective, from Wellington, starts work here in about two weeks and that another detective is retuming to the uniformed branch of the police to fill the vacancy left by Con-
stable Wayne Mills. Constable Mills left to join the United Nations peace keeping force in Namibia. Sgt England said he had received about 40 applications for the new job of receptionist
at the station and that the successful applicant starts by mid June. He said he had hoped to have the Waimarino force increased by one officer but that due to the drop in crime statistics in the area over the past twelve
months head office had declined the application. While he didn't have a breakdown of the statistics available he said overall Ohakune's crime had dropped 20 per cent and Raetihi's slightly more.
