Postman retains his run
Raetihi's postman, David Grossart, is happy to be the successful tenderer for the township's mail run. Mr Grossart said having to tender for the job he has held for so many years was "disheartening." He has worked for the Post Office for over 25 years, starting in the telegraph department and after two years, moving to the manual
profile exchange for a further three years. The father of three has travelled the same 20km route by bike every morning for the past 20 years. From this week it is slightly different however - instead of starting at the northern end of town as was his old routine, he
now begins his deliveries at the southern end. Mr Grossart made the change because of the location of NZ Post's new office, the former Raetihi Borough Council chambers. Mr Grossart admits the job is especially tough in winter, but he
maintains the biking keeps him fit and warm. Mr Grossart is an enthusiastic rugby coach of Ruapehu College's 1st IV and also referees matches in the area. His day begins at 6am each morning when he collects and sorts the mail. He sets out on his run at around 8 am. Mr Grossart said he and manager Michelle
Fredericksen have adjusted well to the new office. He and other staff were involved with moving post boxes and equipment over the weekend. Waimarino Mayor Garrick Workman commended Mr Grossart's 20 years of loyal service to New Zealand Post.
