Tumbling teen seeks sponsorship
14-year old Carys Hubbard (pictured) is, not surprisingly, very excited about her pending trip to Australia to represent New Zealand at the Australian National Championships. Carys is pictured wearing a tracksuit supplied by Samurai Sporting Goods in Wanganui, the company sponsoring her uniform. Carys will be competing against the cream of Australia' s grade eight gymnasts, a prospect she is nervous about. Carys will be competing on all apparatus and in the floor
exercise. She told the Bulletin she will be using the time leading up to the competition wisely, practicing a number of brand new, more advanced routines and polishing up old ones. Carys is aided by her mother Wendy, and friend Jackie Fraser, who holds a degree in physical education. Mr Glyn Hubbard said it will cost between $1500-52000 to send Carys to Perth to compete. Fundraising by the club for the event will begin immediately, he said. Mr Hubbard was
manager of the 1985 boys' national team that competed in Australia. Carys spent an extra week in Christchurch after the New Zealand Nationals, where she
and her five level eight team members were fitted for the New Zealand squad uniforms. The Bulletin joins with the Waimarino in wishing Carys success in Perth.
