King kumara takes the cake!
Gardener Bryan Clark, makes no secret as to how he managed to grow a kumara weighing 2 1/2 kilos. The Morrinsville man who works for the New Zealand Dairy Company, astounded his Waimarino friends, Norman and Eva Grossart, with the ex-traordinary-sized kumara. Mr Clark said he grew the kumara under ! polythene which kept the soil warm and weedfree, and the plants frost-free. The kumaras were planted at Labour Weekend, with all but one row covered by polythene. According to Mr Clark, the plants left uncovered yielded kumaras of "average size." "There's still one row I that I haven't dug up | yet", he said. "There I might be some still in | the ground that are ; bigger than this." The father-of-three was unsure of the fate ; of the kumara, but said ' it would probably end up on the dinner table.
