Grant for RSBA

The Waimarino District Council have agreed to grant $750 from the tourism promotion fund to the Ruapehu South Business Association, for advertising the coming Winter Carnival. The resolution asked that the RSBA match the figure. The association also requested that the council grant permission for a section of Thames Street to be roped off between 10am-6pm on Saturday June 3, for the purpose of setting up stalls on the street. Councillor Doug Bennett moved that an

amendment be made, that barriers be removed from the street before darkness, by 4pm. Cr Bennett suggested that an additional stipulation be added, that no stalls should be placed on the road. * Speaking against the amendment, Cr Bruce Thompson said the whole atmosphere of the carnival would be spoiled and some activities would be curtailed if stall holders were prohibited from the road. "They're (RSBA) trying to do something for the district, but we seem to be spending most of our time knocking them back", he said. The amendment by Cr Bennett was lost.
