No change in pay

Waimarino Mayor Garrick Workman refused to accept an increase of his honorarium at the recent District Council monthly meeting. Deputy Mayor Bruce Thompson moved that the Mayor's honorarium be increased while councillors' remuneration remain the same. Cr Thompson said he felt strongly about the issue, on the merits of Mr Workman's hefty work load.

Mr Workman told the council that it should be "everybody or nobody." "If I were to have an increase, then everyone should have an increase", he said. Mr Workman said the time was not right for any councillor to be taking an increase in their payment for attendance of meetings. Cr Doug Bennett moved that both the Mayor's honorarium and councillors' remuneration remain unchanged.
