Bovine TB "epidemic"

Bovine Tuberculosis is spreading at an alarming rate, according to Federated Farmers. The disease which is spread by deer and possums, is considered a bigger threat to the country than the South Island's rabbit problem. Waimarino delegate to the Wanganui Provincial District of Federated Farmsrs, Alf Alabaster, said new cases of bovine TB are being reported every day in this area. There is a real fear that TB could spread

further, through the number of East Coast cattle that are currently being grazed in the area. The bovine TB situation is being monitered in the East Coast, but there is not the finance to test cattle before they are returned. Mr Alabaster told the Wanganui Chronicle that money spent on eradicating possums in the, region could have been better spent on ways to combat bovine TB, such as research.
