Successful year for bowlers
Members of the Ohakune Women's Bowling Club marked the official end of the 1988/89 season with an informal dinner followed by the presentation of trophies and bars, last Sunday at the club rooms. Spokesperson for the evening, Bernice Cochrane, commended the fine effort by team members and individuals who represented the club at various tournaments throughout the season. A team of four played an invitation tournament at Hawera early in the season where they performed well, qualifying among the top 16. Players Audrey Nation, Betty Hammcnd, June Foster and kita Kaiwhare competed in the Thomas Cook teams competition at Palmerston North earlier in the year, where they qualified but were beaten in post section play. Two members of the same team played in the pairs competition at Manawatu this year and were only narrowly beaten during an extra
end in the third round of post section play. Teams played for the Pluck and Simonsen's Challenge Cups regionally, but were unsuccessful this year. Club president Vi Brown and patron E. Martin presented the trophies and bars to members. Open singles: bar and Nation Cup, Audrey Nation. Senior singles: bar, Audrey Nation. Intermediate singles: bar, Christina Kaiwhare. Teams events: bars and Pearson's Cup; Vi Brown (skip), Elaine Cornwall (2), Bernice Cochrane (3) and Christina Kaiwhare (lead). Senior 'A' pairs: Vi Brown (skip) and Bernice Cochrane (lead); 'B' pairs, Elaine Cornwall (skip) and Christina Kaiwhare (lead). Congrieve Steadman Cup: Audrey Nation (skip), Rita Kaiwhare (2), June Foster (3) and Betty Hammond (lead). Heath Cup: Bernice Cochrane (skip) and Christina Kaiwhare (lead).
