National Park comes first

Tongariro National Park's management plan should be drawn up and adopted to include what is best for the park and then looked at in terms of World Heritage status, said Tongariro District Conservator Paul Green recently. Mr Green was commenting on reports that Tongariro's chances of receiving World Her-

itage status would be jeopardized by a raise in the upper ski field boundaries on Mt Ruapehu. "If after we've decided on what's best for Tongariro it fits in with the World Heritage organisation then that's fine", said Mr Green. He said he thought it would be a big mistake to try to pre-judge what criteria the World Heritage people would look at.
