Carys tumbling her way to the top
Turoa Tumblers youngster Carys Hubbard will represent her country in Perth next month, in the Australian National Gymnastics Championships.
Fourteen-year old Carys was selected for the New Zealand level eight squad after being placed second overall in the New Zealand Championships held in Christchurch last week. Carys performed well on bars, beam, vault and floor, placing her second in her grade and second overall. Results: 1st bars, 8.8pts; 3rd vault, 8.73; 3rd beam, 8.25; floor, 7.75.
Success is particularly sweet for Carys, who was unable to compete last year because of a knee injury. Proud dad, Turoa Tumblers Coach Glyn Hubbard, said Carys is the first female Tumbler to compete internationally. Former j Tumbler Warren Scott was the first male to represent his country overseas. Mr Hubbard said it
will cost between $1500-$2000 to send Carys to Perth to compete. Fundraising by the club for the event will begin immediately, he said. Carys returns from Christchurch today, where she and her five team members remained after the cpmpetition for fittings of their NZ squad uniform. A number of other former Turoa Tumblers
have been successful in their chosen sports. Ex-Tumblers include disabled skier Patrick Cooper who represents New Zealand at the Disabled Olympics next year; dancers Ursula Robb and Cherie Young, Warren Scott, and accomplished rider Tania Taylor. Mr Hubbard said gymnastics is a great base for all sports.
