There is only one thing worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about. Oscar Wilde BIG BROTHER SNIFFS OUT COUNCIL COUGHERS The fight for non-smokers' right to be able to breath clean air took a small but significant step forward recently with the installation of smoke detectors in all council buildings. One of the detectors has been located with particular symbolic significance, right over the heads of the Waimarino District Council's three persistent puffers. Already they have bowed to the will of the strengthening voice of those whose only aim is to be able to breath clean, fresh mountain air without the stench of second hand carcinogenic smouldering dead leaves wrapped in dioxin soaked paper! (phew! let me just stop and take a deep, clean-air breath) (thanks) The three councillors have agreed not only to not smoke during meetings but to refrain from fouling any council building air space. To show how much they care about wheezing on the weed the trio are willing to brave the coldest Waimarino adjournment and huddle, hacking away, out on the council steps at all hours of a marathon meeting. ( Gossip wonders how long it'll be before they put the "Big Brother is Sniffing You" machines in council parks, reserves, on streets, footpaths, phone boxes elc?) Footnote: An added advantage of the smoke detectors is to provide early warning of fires, whether started by smokers or non-smokers.
