The New Zealand 1990 Commission has been established to undertake a number of tasks and initiatives to ensure that New Zealanders are encouraged to participate in various ways during 1990. The Commission is encouraging the establishment of local voluntary committees called "NZ 1990 Community Committees" to assist with a variety of functions relating to 1990.
