Car rally appreciation

I was Clerk of Course for the AC Delco Restricted National Rally run near Raetihi and Ohakune recently. Through the pages of your publication I would like to thank all the people who live on or near the roads used by the rally for their patience and understanding regarding the closures, the noise and the dust, and for the sensible way in which spectators behaved. I hope we turned on a good show for them. I have also been asked to thank you for the hospitality and kindness that the competitors, support crews and the organising team

received from all members of the two communities.

Wellington Car Club (Inc) Furtday thanks On behalf of the "Chills off" committee, I wish to sincerely thank the Waimarino Gun Club and Waimarino Golf Club members for their hospitality and use of facilities, and for permitting the interruption to their set activities, to provide opportuni-

ties some of us would not normally venture to try. We also greatly appreciate the involvement of the team competitors, marshalls, road safety monitors, lead, back-up, team & equipment relay vehicle drivers and of course the hangi and social "teams", and the many other people who performed the tasks necessary to organise such a programme. The "Chills off" committee organised the Funday primarily as a fundraising exercise, of course, but were also keen for the community to enjoy the benefits of sharing a common goal, that being-to have fun in the company of many people, who would share the costs. We believe that fun can be enjoyed without having to spend vast amounts of cash. Can you remember how you occupied leisure time before the advent of modern technology? It is apparent, that with more leisure time now, and probably for some time to come, that the baths would service the community better if enclosed, providing further challenges for sport and recreation. During the three years since fundraising began, we have managed to accumulate $20,000 (even with a nine month unofficial recess period last year). During that time we have organised many

many events and functions, some of which have not been profitable but, we are still prepared to press on. We are determined that this project will succeed and to do that we need your active support - even if only to acknowledge the organisational skilis of the many people involved. We now have a committee of fifteen people and our active support group is increasing in numbers. We believe that small regular contributions, both in time, goods and money, from everyone in the community will achieve the aim of this community project. Your clubs, organisation or group may be able and willing to help. If you have any comments or enquiries please contact the undersigned.

"Chills Off" Chairperson Pub Commentary Phil Abel must be really angry, I have not been called "Mister" for yonks. His letter, which I take it was to be a reply to my comments on the Railway Station development, is emotional but totally misses the mark. I could have heard this type of commentary over a few jugs at the pub, late in the evening. Nowhere in his letter does he dispute the estimate of the costs involved, which is what it is all about. I give him the benefit of the doubt he is probably an

idealist rather than a dreamer, though his other letter does not really encourage the doubt. I will however deal with the points he does raise: I did not refer to the grant of $20,000 from the Council for public relations, that is a different ball game - it is from rates and rates are tax deductible for business purposes but not for householders! The two figures quoted should have been $20,000 and $120,000, the latter being misquoted in the Bulletin , the $12,000 that Phil refers to is however a pledge total that he quotes in his own letter. Community assistance grants do not grow on trees, they are direct levies from taxes. No one on salary or wages or more importantly to me, pensions, have tax avoidance schemes. I have news for you Phil, you do not appear to know the motives of some people very well. "Quaint Slum" is a quote from a previous correspondent, not me, possibly a member of the RSBA. Newcomer indeed! My family goes back to 1904 in Ohakune. I have been a constant visitor to the town since 1940 and a ratepayer from 1971, a bit before zoning. I would appreciate any sober, factual comment, if you believe that benefit can come to Ohakune from this scheme, then you must produce convincing facts that will stand up to public scrutiny. You of course are a "new comer" to the Junction. Welcome, perhaps we may have a drink with you sometime.

Carter's confusion Help! I'm confused - I don't know where I live any more. It used to be called Carter Terrace, until the street sign was broken and subsequently removed to be fixed. When it came back it had been reincarnated as Carter's Terrace. Some people might say that the addition of an V barely warrants mention, but when you've been writing it without that letter for a few years - well, it's a bit unsettling. But to open up the latest "up to date" business directory for the Waimarino - funnily enough, ours was delivered to our mailbox - to discover that our street dosen't even get a mention in the Ohakune Borough street map - well, it's enough to give a person a complex!
