Rural rates rise pulled back

The rural ward of the Waimarino District Council faces a 5.7 per cent increase in its general rate for 1989/90 and the two urban wards' general rate remains the same as last years. This follows a draft estimate which would have seen a 20 per cent increase in the rural ward general rate and a five per cent rise in the Raetihi ward general rate.

After an informal meeting of councillors on April 19 council officers trimmed back the budget to the final figures, an effort by the officers which was to be commendedr according to Mayor Workman. Cuts have been made in the rural ward budget from reducing the closing balance from $86,000 to $58,000, then to $50,000; a reduction in the administration budget; and reductions in

the rural roading programme. Minor road sealing work has been cut, but the bulk of the roading programme has been left intact. There is a risk in cutting the closing balance, said Mayor Workman, in that it puts more pressure on council officers to keep within budget and leaves little in reserve for "catastrophes". He said it was better to run that risk than to rate more highly.
