ANZAC service

Last weck an Anzac day service was conducted by Padre Cotton at the Memorial Alcove inside the Waiouru Army Museum. A large number of people attended this service, not only soldiers but also civilian and children from the Pippins, Brownies, Guides, Scouts and St John's Ambulance. After the service the dedication of a lone pine was made outside in the carpark. This is4 the second such pine to have been planted outside the museum. The first one was planted in 1985 but, sadly, died. The pine tree was grown from a cone collected in the Lone Pine Cemetery at Gallipoli by members of the family of a Mr Barton who had served there during the First World War. The cone was collected in 1983 and the tree grown with care by Mr Gordon Martyn, son-in-law of Mr Barton. This pine tree should reach the magnificent height of 80 feet when fully matured. The plaque next to the tree reads: "ANZAC DAY 25 April 1989. This tree was grown from a seed from a pine cone picked up beneath the pine tree in the Lone Pine Cemetery Gallipoli by Mr C.J.W. Carton in 1983 and grown in Hamilton by Mr G. Martyn."
