Mystery Creek goes international

A major world agricultural exposition is to be held in Hamilton next year as part of New Zealand's commemoration of 150 years as a nation.

The event will be known as World Agricultural Expo '90 and will be the focus of the 22nd New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek from June 14 to 17, 1990. Expo '90, with a promotional budget in excess of $700,000, will also feature the World Agricultural Forum to be held over the three days preceding the Fieldays. The theme of the Forum will be futuristic, looking at agriculture towards the year 2000, with an emphasis on international marketing > and the continuing impact of the European Economic Community. At least 10 acknowledged world authorities on various specialist agricultural areas will be invited to speak. To be held from Monday, June 11 to Wednesday, June 13, the forum will also link with the traditional New Zealand farmers' conference and open days organised by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries' Ruakura Agriculture Centre. "It is appropriate that a celebration of agriculture's impact on

the national economy and its contribution on an international basis, should come during an important milestone in New Zealand's history," says NZ National Fieldays Society president Colin Gordge. Mr Gordge said 19 countries had been invited by the Minister of Agriculture to participate and organisers are confident that at least eight nations will become involved. A strong New Zealand presence in the Expo area from New Zealand

producer and marketing boards, the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the leading dairy companies, is also expected. With an extra

exhibition day and the international focus, organisers are predicting a record-breaking attendance - at least 85,000, up from the regular Fieldays crowd of

65,000. More than 500 New Zealand exhibitors are also expected, making it the biggest event in the history of the Fieldays.
