'Save forests': National

The National Party is concerned that the Government is letting New Zealand Forests drift into foreign ownership. "The Labour Government is now setting up the massive state forest resource to go the same way as New Zealand Steel and the same foreign buyers are interested in picking up another bargain," said Jim Bolger last week. "The next National Government is not going to follow Labour's path of handing a major asset like our forest over to foreign owners to exploit in any manner they see fit. "National's policy is to protect wood supply for small mills and to ensure replanting in areas committed to long term forestry. We want the maximum processing of New Zealand's forest resources to take place in New Zealand. "Our forests are New Zealand's major development hope for the next two decades. Managed correctly, they are the base for a new surge of industrial development that will provide long term jobs for thousands of New Zealanders. " Mr Bolger said.
