Money available for Maori business
Money is available in this area for the broadening of the Maori economic base to create long term unsubsidized employment for Maori people, but no one in this area is taking advantage of it. Money is provided through the Maori Authorities New Alliance (Mana), annually by parliament through tribal and regional authorities which have been recognised by the Minister of Maori Affairs. In the Southern Ruapehu area the Whanganui River Maori Trust Board is the authority through which
applications to Mana can be made. Approved applicants can receive funding for the establishment of new businesses, the expansion of existing businesses or the refinancing of businesses that have a need for capital assistance. There are various criteria that must be met by each applicant. While applications are made through the local Iwi any Maori people can apply in this area, not necessarily those from local marae. The Mana co-ordina-tor in this area is Noel Akapita, phone 58 956,
