Ohakune & Raetihi win, Waiouru lose

Local rugby teams had mixed fortunes last weekend on fields around the region. Waiouru v Utiku OB The Waiouru side went down to Utiku Old Boys, 17-9. Steve Cameron, Pita Lloyd and Haig Elgar played well on Saturday. Other notable performances came from Lachlan Harding and Rob Barclay who scored the team's penalty goals. Ohakune-Karioi v Taihape Pirates Ohakune-Karioi players Richard Matthews, Brendan Wilson and Hemi Mareikura featured in the line-up of try scorers, with Whetu Mareikura kicking a conversion and penalty goal for the team. The Ohakune side played cohesively, winning convincingly, 17-10. Raetihi v Huia Thomas Waara and Steve Gordon made a formidable combination

for Raetihi in the game against Huia. Tries were scored by Thomas Waara, Steve Gordon, Marsh Tangaroa, Steve McDonald, Wayne Te Huia and James Renata, with Waara kicking three conversions. The final score was Raetihi 30, Huia 10. Under 19 s Ohakune-Karioi started off the season with a 12-9 loss to Raetihi at Ohakune on Saturday. The following game at Taihape was a good win for the team - 14-4 - against a strong Taihape Pirates side. Tries were scored by Dale Hemara and Neil Fredericksen and two penalties by Mark Donghi, with a very good team effort all round. Steve Hagley was named player of the day Ohakune's game against Kaierau at Ohakune last Saturday

started off well, with the team applying solid driving forward play. After 10 minutes Neil Fredericksen scored under the posts that was then converted by Mark Donghi. A good run from the base of the scrum saw Shane Philips pass to lst Five Dallas Waara,

who stepped inside the cover defence to score the try of the match. Ohakune applied the pressure, coupled with close passing from backs and forwards resulting in a try by Richard Hamlin and converted by Mark Donghi. Kaierau came back with two penalties before half time. Ohakune lost their grip on the game in the

second half, becoming too loose with too much individual play. Just 10 minutes before the final whistle, tries were scored by Dallas Hemara and Shane Philips. Final score was Ohakune-Karioi 26, Kaierau 6. Player of the day was Dallas Waara. With a bye this Saturday, Ohakune plays Counties, at Ohakune, on April 29.
