Sports group for schools

An association has been formed by Ruapehu teachers aimed at organising sports events for primary schools in the Ruapehu area. The association aims to foster interschool interaction through sport and thus improve social interaction between the area's children.

The association initially includes Raetihi, Ohakune, Waiouru, Ngamatea, Orautoha and Rangataua schools. At the inaugural meeting held at Raetihi Primary School, Craig McDonald was elected president of the association with Jude Glennie as secretary. Both teachers are from Ohakune Primary School. A calendar of events has been planned. Swimming sports have already been successfully held at Waiouru and a cross country is to be held at Orautoha in April. A mixed team tournament for winter Kiwisports is planned for the middle term, with a traditional winter sport tournament planned for September. Athletics will be held in the third term and other events will depend on time and weather. Organisers feel it is important that these are run as school events in school time so as not to interfere with weekend sport or other activities. According to, organisers, teachers spend much time organising such events as well as those held within their own school and classroom, often without the recognitidn they deserve. "In the days of Picot and Tomorrow's Schools this fact will be increasingly important. I£* schools are to

have a good and successful sports program, then the community must be aware of efforts made for their children," says Mr McDonald. "Many parents are already aware as they have assisted with sports within the school and helped transport groups the distances required for interschool sport in our area. Without this assistance and support, such events would be impossible," he said. "The efforts of the association can only improve our childrens social and sporting awareness, and be of benefit to the community as a whole."
