Life with Tennis

The Raetihi Tennis Club has burst into life this season.

This is after several years in the doldrums, which has affected many sporting clubs in the district. No doubt the reason for this was the teams tennis which was introduced this year. This event attracted many new members, most of whom have never been a member of this or any other tennis club. The Club is delighted with its new membership and is hoping that this will continue in the years to come. Due to the increased membership the club

has been able to hold championships again for the first time since 1984 and over the past few weekends the courts have been filled with members participating i n t h e s e championships. Another first for the club was the sponsoring of the Combined Championships by Winstone International as well as prizes being donation by Clowns Craft Shop in Raetihi. For this the club is very appreciative of the

generosity and support. Results of Senior Championships are as follows: Mens Singles, Willie Wilson; Runner Up, Justin King. Ladies Singles, Maria Willcox; Runner Up, Lesley Todd. Mens Doubles, Darreil McDonnell & Oarren Webb; Runner Up, James Renata & Bernis McGahan. Ladies Doubles, Maria Willcox & Ruth Pehi; Runners Up, Nancy Winter & Faith Wlse. Sponsored Combined Doubles, Faith Wise & Don Robinson; Runners Up, Rauna & Wayne (Snr.) TeHuia. Faith and Nancy, whose combined ages total 114 years, requested that due to their veterans class, they be allowed two points on in every game, but the request was tumed down flat, however they give notice that they intend to give the younger players a run for their money again next year. Junior championships are still to be held and closing day for seniors will be held on Sunday April 2 at 1.30pm with a fun tournament. Members are asked to take a plate (with something on it!) If wet the club will still gather at the clubrooms for presentations and "cuppa."
