Waimarino statistics

Statistics released recently by the Ohakune Police detailing the number of serious crimes, offences and incidents reported for 1985-88 in the Waimarino area show some interesting trends. The number of serious crimes reported for 1988 is nearly half that of 1985 - 113 crimes were reported for the year 1985, with only 60 in 1988. Offences have decreased steadily also, from 794 down to 649. The number of reported incidents however, has increased from a mere 148 in 1985 to a staggering 1020 incidents reported for 1988. An incident is. defined as a report to police that is acted upon but from which no court action results. Police officials say the increase is due chiefly to a greater awareness by the general public of the need to report even minor incidents that may have been overlooked in the past. Police say too, that the increase is due to a national trend of increased criminal activity.
