Parasite possible ally in wasp battle
Wasps are undoubtedly a problem in the Waimarino and the district council is considering taking on the responsibility for combating them. District Manager John Murrihy told the Works and Reserves Committee last week that the DSIR had asked councils to contribute to a research programme on eradication of the pest. The committee agreed that it was a problem and that further information on the DSIR programme should be sought. Mr Murrihy raised the subject with the committee along with a request from the Waimarino Hospital for the council to help in eradicating nests from land adjacent to the hospital. He said wasps were a perennial problem here and that council officers were constantly asked to get rid of nests. He told the committee of the DSIR's approach to councils on the research programme, explaining that the department was researching the viability of a parasite that would "munch up" the wasps. "It would cost us a few bob but given the number of wasps in this area it could be worth looking into," said Mr Murrihy. The committee agreed that in the short term works staff should look at helping to destroy wasp nests in the urban area were possible.
