TONGARIRO POWER TUNNEL REPAIRED

Six weeks of round-the-clock repairs to the Tongariro Power scheme's Western Diversion tunnel were completed last week and the tunnel is now back in service. The tunnel had been out of service since January after two half-metre holes in its lining were discovered. A large cavity adjacent to the tunnel created by pressurized water forcing gravel through the holes is yet to be filled. Staff will drill 60 metres down from ground level to the cavity and fill it from there. This task is expected to take four to six weeks. Total cost of the repair is expected to be more than $600,000.
