MANGANUIATEAO RIVER PROTECTION CONFIRMED

The national water conservation order for the Manganuioteao River has been confirmed. Last week Environment under-secretary Peter Dunne announced the confirmation of the draft order which was notified in March last year. The order means the upper reaches of the Manganuioteao River will be preserved in its natural state along with its tributaries the Mangaturuturu and the Makatote. The lower Manganuiateao and lower Waimarino and the Orautoha streams are given a high level of protection, with no water rights for power development though water may be available for irrigation. The Manganuiateao is the last of the large unmodified rivers that flows off the sides of Mt Ruapehu.
