Tangiwai memorial by winter

Groups working on a project to erect a permanent memorial to the people who died in the 1953 Tangiwai Rail Disaster are planning to start work within the next few months.

Ruapehu Lions Club president Ian Strachan said participants in the project, who met recently, were hoping to have the memorial erected before winter. It will be a granite monument, suitably inscribed and placed on

the west bank of the Whangaehu River, between the rail and road bridges. The New Zealand Monumental Masons' Association are donating the monument and Lions clubs from Waiouru, Ruapehu, Taihape and Hunterville

will landscape the site. The monument is planned to be visible from the main road, and the site will include a roundabout for vehicles and picnic tables for travellers. Mr Strachan said earTurn page 2
