All goes well for Raetihi tennis

The Raetihi Tennis Club couldn't have wished for a better day last Sunday for its Mixed Doubles Championship - with beautiful weather, a fantastic turnout and superb tennis, say organisers.

Although the tournament was hurriedly put together the response was positive and there was little trouble bringing together 18 partners to make up the draw. Sunday's play con-

sisted of the Main Draw, Plate, Special Plate and Consolation Plate. Even tuai winners were Faith Wise and Don Robinson over a spirited Wayne and Rona TeHuia in a gruelling

three set final, 6-5, 4-6, 6-3. Don, who was unable to sleep the night before the tournament due to worry, appeared to be cracking under the pressure in the final set but the experience of Faith pulled them through. Wayne and Rona must be considered unlucky to lose, especially considering the skinned knees suffered by Wayne. Nancy Winter and

Gary Kristiansen (Kristy) easily overcame Jane Voon and Mai Cotter (who thoroughly enjoyed disgracing themselves) to take the Plate prize. Kristy hadn't played for 15 years, and thought tennis balls were still white! Darren and Joy McDonnell (another very strong combination) secured the Special Plate final with a convincing win over Andrew Con-

don and Ruth Hepi. The Consolation Plate winners were Aaron McCann and Noni Cleary, they defeated Missy and Hemi Biddle. Special thanks from organisers go to: Rowena and Kristy of 'Clowns' for donating a prize; Winstones Pulp international for their generous sponsorship; and Hemi Biddle for organising the weather!
